Anne Frank and her family went into hiding in the Secret Annex as Anne liked to call it. The Secret Annex was behind her dad's old business, this business got taken away from him because he a jew. The "secret" part about it was that a bookcase was the door. Tis was to try and hide themselves even further.
On the morning of 4 August 1944, a German uniformed police (Also known as Grune Polizier) stormed into the secret annex following the tip of an unknown informer. Everyone in the annex was given 10 minutes to pack everything they wanted to bring with them before being taken away to Gestapo headquarters. Anne Frank was 15 when they were discovered and died in March 1945, only days after her sister Margot.
When Anne was arrested with the others in the Annex, and stepped out into the sunshine for the first time in over two years, she was 15 years one month and 23 days old.
The literal name of the place was het achterhuis: "the back-house". Most of the old canalside buildings had one - it was a basic feature of Dutch architecture for several centuries. Anne herself called it "the back house", "Secret Annexe" being a phrase made up by an over-enthusiastic English translator.

There was an illegal entry in early 1943 (nothing taken), then a burglary on July 15th, 1943, and another on February 29, 1944 . Both of these were quite professional - those in the annex did not know it until after the fact. Lastly, there was a break in on April 9, 1944 by a ten-year-old boy from the neighborhood named Hans Wijnberg. He also took nothing, but the commotion he created scared the people in the annex badly, and they spent a long, terrifying night until help came the next morning.
