Part of his name has been with him since he was just a kid-- born Peter Gene Hernandez, it was his father who nicknamed him "Bruno" when he was about two, because his dad thought he resembled professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. But the "Mars" part didn't come about till Bruno had graduated from high school, and was about to begin his music career. He was seventeen when he came up with the last name "Mars" because he thought it sounded impressive-- girls had evidently told him that he was "out of this world."
