It took Thomas Edison 1 year to invent the light bulb. In that year, he experimented with over 1400 different fibers until he tried cotton fiber. This light bulb could last over 1500 hours, unlike the very first light bulbs that could only last 40 hours.
1 year
Thomas Edison failed over 1,000 times before he was successful in creating the light bulb. It took Edison three years to complete the light bulb for is successful full scale test in 1882.

Actually, The first incandescent light bulb was constructed in 1840. It consisted of a platinum coil contained in a glass vacuum tube, and was constructed by British scientist, Warren De la Rue. There were other experiments on incandescent light before and after, but this was the first incandescent light bulb, as the platinum filament was enclosed in a vacuum tube.

Sir Joseph Swann of England and Thomas Edison both developed workable electric incandescent lamps during the 1870s. Edison's lamp became the first commercially successful incandescent lamp (circa 1879). Edison received U.S. Patent 223,898 for his incandescent lamp in 1880.

However, contrary to popular belief, Edison did not "invent" the first lightbulb, he improved upon a 50-year-old idea. Canadians Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans patented a light bulb in 1875, but could not raise the financing to commercialize their invention. Edison bought the rights to their patent.

Also many electric lights had been invented and patented between 1840 and 1879, but what the earlier inventors failed to do that Edison did was invent, construct, and invest in the infrastructure to generate and distribute electricity to people so that they could easily use his lightbulb. He was the first to make the electrical infrastructure required to make the lightbulb sell!

Actually Thomas Edison did not invent the incandescent light bulb but he did invent the first practical one in 1880.

Edison put together a practical light bulb on October 22, 1879. (A number of others had light bulbs before this.)Wikipedia has a great article on the electric light bulb, including its history. You'll find a link to it below. Why not drop by and skim it?

1879 by Joseph swan....

October 17, 1879 was the date that Edison ran the first current to his commercially practical incandescent electric bulb. Edicson did not invent the electric light bulb, he simply re-engineered it to be more commercially viable, and a little safer than existing arc lights or open flames.

Actually, Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb, it's a common misconception. Thomas Edison made significant improvements to the light bulb that was originally invented by Humphrey Davy in 1806.

In October 1879 Thomas Edison managed to make a light bulb that burned for 13.5 hours. Later he made one that lasted over 100 hours, and finally one that would burn for more than 1200 hours. He got a patent for this in 1880.
