Harold Clayton Urey (1893-1981) discovered the heavy hydrogen isotopes in the 1930s. In 1931 he demonstrated the existence of the hydrogen isotope of atomic weight two, one with weight three was supposed but not yet revealed. For his discovery of heavy hydrogen Urey was awarded the Nobel prize of chemistry in 1934.The discovery of H2 (Deuterium) was announced by Harold C. Urey, F.G. Brickwedde, and G. M. Murphy in the Physical Review of 1 January 1932. A more comprehensive article appeared in the April issue of that journal. They did not give a name to the newly discovered isotope, not for the isotope H3 which they predicted.
