He died in May of 1945 after a death match, 3 days before the camp was liberated. Peter was marched out of Auschwitz with other prisoners as the Russians approached in late January of 1945 (Otto Frank, too sick to travel, was "abandoned" there - and it saved his life).
Mr. Van Pels, also known as Hermann van Pels, died in the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria in 1944. He perished as a result of the harsh conditions, brutality, and maltreatment in the camp during World War II.
Hermann van Pels (van Daan) died in Auschwitz several days after his arrival. According to eyewitnesses at the camp, after 2 or 3 days he became mentally unable to cope with the harsh labour. This was the beginning of the end for van Pels. He injured his thumb on work detail and was sent to the sick barracks. Soon there were selections and van Pels was selected for the gas chambers, where he was poisoned to death. His selection was witnessed by Otto Frank and Peter van Pels.
Peter van Pels was with the Frank family in Westerbork and Auschwitz. He and Otto saw each other often at Auschwitz. When the camp was evacuated prior to its liberation, Mr. Frank was too ill to leave and remained in the infirmary. He tried to get Peter to stay there too, but Peter felt it was too dangerous. He was one of the many prisoners marched away in the snow. He ended up at Mauthausen death camp in Austria, where he died shortly before the camp's liberation.
