Very young. Probably about 19 or 20.
John was the apostle that Jesus loved.
John was the son of Zebedee, a Galilean fisherman, and Salome. John and his brother James were among the first disciples called by Jesus.
from his heart
John was the "disciple Jesus loved". Perhaps they were partners?
John called himself, "the disciple whom Jesus loved", yet he did not love him more than us, as he loves everyone, and John knew he was loved, and that is what made him close, where we all may be also if we abide in his love.
In John's gospel, the "disciple whom Jesus loved" leaned on the breast of Jesus. Late in the second century, Ireneus identified the "disciple whom Jesus loved"as John, one of the twelve, as a result of which the fourth gospel became known as John's Gospel. The scene in which the "disciple whom Jesus loved" leaned on Jesus is not mentioned in any of the earlier gospels, but if Ireneus was correct, then we could say that it was John.
That James was not his brother.
Yes. We are told that John the disciple (not John the baptist!) had a brother called James, who were both sons of a fisherman called Zebedee. Both John and James were disciples of Jesus, and were typical beligerent teenage boys - they were called, in fact, the 'Sons of Thunder'.
Simon Peter followed Jesus because Jesus called him to be his disciple, and Peter was drawn to Jesus' teachings and presence. Peter recognized Jesus as the Messiah and experienced firsthand the power and love of Jesus in his life. He was also inspired to follow Jesus by witnessing the miracles and witnessing Jesus' compassion for others.
According to the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee and saw Simon and his brother Andrew fishing. He called Simon Peter and Andrew to follow him. (Mark 1:15-16)According to John's Gospel, Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. He left John, to follow Jesus and, on the way, ran to bring Peter and they both followed Jesus (John 1:40-42).
Maybe because he was old, or busy fishing. Maybe Jesus called only James and John because they were younger; and Jesus knew that their father Zebedee had to act in accordance with his lifestyle. I hope that helped.
the apostles of Jesus Christ are Peter, John, James,
