In 1935 at the age of 16 Edmund Hillary interest in climbing was sparked during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu which stands at 2,797 m (9,177 ft). In 1939 completed his first major climb, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier which is1,933 m (6,342 ft) high and located near Aoraki/Mount Cook in the Southern Alps.
