The initial damage from the 1669 Mt. Etna eruption was actually caused by an earthquake and accompanying lava flow. More than 40 towns were damaged and 20,000 to 60,000 people were left homeless.
People were terrified and and didnt know what to do, later on, people started getting used to it and knew what to do, however, the tourists didnt know anything about it and were not acting safe. The local people felt the urge to tell and explain to the tourists about how the Volcano is dangerous and what they should expect. This is what is happening now.

Mount Etna first began erupting 500,000 years ago. The first recordings of eruptions from Mount Etna were dated as early as 1500 BC.
Nobody knows when Mount Etna was formed. Scientists are still trying to figure it out. Scientists estimate that Mount Etna has had eruptions for 2.5 million years. They also estimeate that the lava in Mount Etna is 300,000 years old. There is recorded history that Mount Etna has been erupting since 1500 BC.
Mount Etna is a stratovolcano that sits on a tectonic fault line. The fault line runs from the Lipari Isles over the east coast of Sicily to the Hyblean Mountains.
In its most recent activity Mount Etna has erupted basaltic lava. These eruptions have been mildly explosive and produced glowing red lava flows due to the lava's relatively low viscosity.
