The promise of a Messiah was greatly anticipated by the Jewish people. God promised to send a king that would lead them. They were expecting a king as they understood the word. With power, money and maybe a big house. Jesus was none of those. He was born into a poor family. He worked hard with his earthly father Joseph. Because He wasn't what they thought He should be they turned against Him. The company He kept did not futher his cause with Jewish leaders. He hung with lepers, prostitutes and tax collectors, something a 'true' king would never have done. But they missed the whole point. Christ's mission was not to save the Jews, He was sent to save all mankind, Jew and Gentile alike. It was hard for the Jewish leaders of the day to reconcile this attitude.
