In The Devil by Guy de Maupassant death is approached differently by each character. The protagonist Monsieur de Saint-Hiver is afraid of death because he is a devout Catholic and believes in the consequences of sin. He is resigned to his fate and makes an effort to accept it. His servant Marie on the other hand is fatalistic and accepts death as inevitable. The doctor and priest view death as a necessary part of life and try to comfort Saint-Hiver in his last moments.
The way each character approaches death can be summarized as follows:
Overall death is portrayed as a natural part of life and each character deals with it in their own way. Monsieur de Saint-Hiver is fearful and resigned to his fate Marie is fatalistic and the doctor and priest try to comfort him and accept death as an inevitable part of life.

Not likely as it would not be a smart strategic move. The devil has to trick you into doing something which is not bound to happen if identity is revealed. It is only dangerous if you don't recognize him for what he is when appears to be harmless.
