After three other publishers rejected it, 'A Study in Scarlet' was first published in the 1887 Beeton's 'Christmas Annual' (UK) owned by Ward Lock & Co. (where it was kind of lost after two other stories in the annual). There were probably about 30,000 copies printed, and there are only 33 known copies left in existence making it one of the most expensive collectible magazines.
The managing editor of Lippincott's Monthly magazine (US) commissioned Conan Doyle to write another Holmes novel. which became 'The Sign of Four' published in the February 1890 edition, but it was not until the short stories appeared in 'The Strand Magazine' (UK) starting in July 1891 that Sherlock Holmes became widely popular.
