The first Polio epidemic was in 1894 in Vermont with 132 cases of it.
A polio vaccine was invented in 1954. Each year after that, the number of polio cases decreased. By 1974, only 5 cases occurred. These were all people who were linked to the polio vaccine.
The industrialized countries of the world have fewer cases of polio because there are many more vaccinated individuals.
As of July 14, 2010 there have been 545 cases of "wild" polio worldwide in 2010. The total number of cases in 2009 was 1604. There are still some countries using the oral polio vaccine that in extremely rare cases can cause polio. I don't know the statistics for those cases.
In pulse polio programme, polio vaccine is given to all the children below the age of 5 years irrespective of there vaccination schedule, all at a time. This will reduce the burden of polio virus in society drastically.
Intensified Pulse Polio Program started in India in 1994 officially, but it was spread through out the country in 1995 with the main aim of eradicating polio by 2000 AD. According to it there is no need of giving oral polio vaccine to the children after 2000 AD. But this was not successful and so was extended up to 2005 with a vision of declaring India a polio free state by 2005. But this also failed. According to National Plan of Action 2005 developed by Department of women and child development 2007 the objective under child survival is to certify by 2007 the eradication of polio, which is not possible under present conditions with almost 1000 cases of polio being reported from different states of India.
