For centuries rumors of mysterious white lions (Panthera leo krugeri)had been circulating in South Africa.Legend said the white pelage represented the good to be found in all creatures.

Strong claims of sightings started to surface in 1928. Scattered reports continued over the next 47 years, until confirmation of the colouration came in 1975 whena littercontainingtwo white cubs wasseenatTimbavati Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park.

The discovery came as researcher and conservationist Chris McBride was studying lions at Timbavati. In October, his elder sister and her son visited. While Chris lay in bed sick and feeling sorry for himself, they went out alonewith a trackerfor theday and spotted lioness 'Tabby' at a kill. With her were three new cubs, one tawny, and two which were as white as polar bears. They were roughly two weeks old.

No one is quite sure why but if you watch the film called 'The White Lion' you might find that some tribes believe that white lions are messengers from the gods and are that color because they came from the stars. But scientists are still trying to figure out why.
Lions that are white are probably albino witch means it has all white fur. If you see a albino anything, like a lion, alligator, and more you are lucky because anything albino is very rare.

White lions are simply a different color morph which is rare. It is called leucism. White lions have normal pigmentation in their eyes and elsewhere on their bodies so are not albinos. Similarly, some leopards and jaguars are born melanistic - all black rather than spotted. They are collectively known as black panthers.
