i have a 93 mpv and i have to do the same thing you. You have to take alot off. Such as the fan, and radiator.
Then you would have to take the timing belt covers off. i believe the timing belt must come off also cause to screws from the timing belt are holding the water pump in...a lot of work...
Most of the time you get coolant on the timing belt, this can weaken it. Plus as long as you are in there, unless the belt was recently replaced, go ahead and change it too. It will save you another repair later.

We replaced ours and it cost 21.95 for a lifetime water pump.....My husband replaced it by himself...
The water pump from Mazda 626 is the same, all part from Mazda 626 work very good in the Kia Credos and Clarus.
In order to remove the water pump on a 2000 Mazda Millennia, you must first remove the timing belt and the pulley for the water pump. Remove the pump itself by detaching the four bolts that are securing it. Next, replace any gaskets, install the new pump, then the pulley, and then the timing belt.
Could you tell me how would you replace the oil pump on a Mazda Protege?
About $500.00
The water pump is located behind the timing belt cover and is driven by the timing belt. You need to reove it to gain access to the water pump.
