Ocean water has a salinity of 34.6-34.8ppt. Simply put, for every 1000 parts water, it has 34.6-34.8 parts dissolved materials. "Salt" is a complex word. it's not just table salt - it's chlorine, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium ions and many other elements. Ocean salinity can be defined in many ways. You may choose to measure chlorinity or conductivity to describe salinity. Salinity is also affected by temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Ocean water salinity varies only slightly from reef to deep ocean.
