Hard science is usually written by people who are scientiffically literate , even if they don't have degrees, and usually treat science pretty close to reality.

Soft science pretty much uses it as little more than a "science theme" , but might as well be a fantasy novel full of magic, they're just blaming science for it instead of wizards. George Lucas's Star Wars would be an example of soft science. I Robot staring Will Smith would be an example of hard science.
