Koalas have very sharp claws. They need to be sharp because the eucalyptus trees which they climb have tall, straight, quite smooth trunks which have nothing for koalas to grip. One can always tell if a tree has been climbed by a koala, because koala claws leave a series of parallel scratch marks up the trunks the animals climb.
