There is a product called CLR which is available in grocery stores which removes lime deposits.
It should not be a problem to put the faucet in, but it won't LOOK right.

Try CLR. You should be able to get it almost anywhere, certainly any hardware store
Turn the water off to the faucet. Remove the handle. The top of the faucet should unscrew to get to the ball valve. Replace the valve and gaskets then reassemble the faucet.

Proably the faucet has a worn out washer, replacing the washer should fix the problem.
As far as I know, all kitchen sinks have the faucet in the middle. There are usually 4 holes, 3 for the faucet and one for the hand sprayer. Some have a fifth hole for a soap dispenser.
