We feel guilt for the wrong things we do whether or not that wrong has been discovered. Shame is the emotion we feel for the things we believe are wrong, or that are wrong, and will go to any extreme to cover up. Guilt is a healthy way for us to process what we have done; it passes with retribution. Shame never passes; it may fade or be supersede, but it always remains. That is unless it is examined and recognized for what it is.
