There are things you can do to be better than the rest:

  • Practice, Practice, Practice.. Practice every day and focus on your improvement and focus on your weaknesses
  • Learn about your instrument. Study about its history, Different techniques for it and love it
  • Learn from the greats, Look at how famous bass drum players play and copy it. from that come up with your own technique and style.
  • Be unique. Have your own style that lets you stand out from the rest
  • Warm up is everything. Warm up before practicing, playing and especially before your try outs
  • Dynamics. Learn to control your volume. Play at the right volume not louder not quieter. If you need to hit hard hit it hard, if you need to hit soft, hit soft
  • Tempo and Timing. Learn to keep your tempo. Don't rush it or drag it. Timing is key so make sure you know how to count and learn when to hit not by just your mind but by your heart.
  • Play with your heart. Don't play with just your mind but also with your heart. Feel the rhythm, be the foundation that the band needs. Feel the vibe and the feel of the song
  • Play with Confidence. Every hit you make must be a confident hit. Confidence is the key to a strong foundation in the band.

There are a lot more ways to be better for your tryouts but those are just some tips that I myself have learned and applied to my drumming.
