The Roman army gained its strength from its physical and mental training. The physical training was carried out in a twice daily routine. The mental training was a partner to the physical as the Roman soldier was psyched out to win because of his superior training and equipment. They also believed that the gods were on their side and if their faith began to waiver, their general always gave them a pep talk before any battle reminding them of their superiority, the weakness of the enemy and that the gods were on their side as the omens were (always) good for battle.

The Roman army evolved from primitive beginnings as a rural militia, improving its organisation, adopting better weapons (Spanish sword, pilum, artillery), developed a logistics system to sustain it. It also emphasised training, recognising that volumes of undertrained troops were no substitute for trained and hardened troops.

Other aspects were effective command system, experienced veteran commanders, extended service and strong discipline. And also final reward for service in settlement on a farm of their own as a superannuation scheme.

Yes, in fact their army was definitely the strongest in the world at the time which is why their Empire expanded so far. They had many tactics, such as the 'turtle shell' tactic and they easily outwitted the Barbarians who just rushed into battle with no plans whatsoever. The Roman Army was probably the first modern-like army, as they actually planned their battles and knew how to fight properly. Soldiers were kept in good condition and were properly fed and looked after, unlike in many Barbarian armies. They were also paid very good wages and were disciplined well. In the end, they got too ambitious and big for their boots which made them slowly lose land and the Roman Empire ended.
