It was the German way of saying "submarine" which properly should be called a "submersible." It is a shortening of "unterseeboot" to just uboat.

It was an advertising concept for VW a number of years ago. In German is supposedly meant "the joy of driving" or something like that. What it really means in German I haven't a clue but VW used the slogan for years. It was considered a very successful advertising campaign.
