Well my mom is from Belize which is a small country in central america and I have come face to face with a tapir. They are tame in zoos so they do not defend themselves but on the wild the swim away because the are great swimmers. If there are no rivers near buy the tapir will run and also use cammoflauge.
Tapirs will run through thick forest and bushes, and even escape by jumping into rivers, or deep pools of water to escape predators. Young tapirs depend on their mothers who can be extremely fierce when protecting their young, they also use camouflage to evade predators. See related link..
