The Titan lord, Kronos, fathered seven of the gods. He was afraid they would take over and ate his children. However, his wife loved them and made Kronos throw up his perfectly alive children. Zeus, one of his children, led a rebellion and chopped Kronos up with his own scythe, sending the remains into Tartarus. The other Titans were imprisoned in numerous places.

And because of that blood, his children were also gods. As for how they became more specific Gods, once they overthrew Kronos out of anger towards him, they held a lottery to see who would rule over what. Hades drew the Underworld, Zeus drew the Heavens, and Poseidon the sea. Thus becoming God of the Sea.

The titans ruled before the Olympians. Kronos and Rhea (titans) gave birth to many of the Olympian gods. Kronos was afraid that soon his children would overthrow him, so he swallowed them whole.
