The Crimean Peninsula extends into the Black Sea, which lies between Russia and Turkey. The Russian Black Sea Naval Fleet has its headquarters on that peninsula. That protects Russia from an attack from the South. (Of course, there is almost no danger of any attack from the south but that is another story.)
