This changes Plutonium into other materials, and releases huge amounts of energy very quickly. However, the first atomic bomb used in war was a different design. A "bullet" of Uranium 235 metal was fired down a gun barrel into a larger mass of Uranium 235. When the two pieces of Uranium were rapidly brought together, the nuclear fission reaction began.
