Best Answer

Genetic factors determine the structure of an individualâ??s fingerprint, and this entails the pattern of ridges and valleys. The micro-environment of the fetus determines the position of future skin indentations.

Skin produces the fingerprint when you are still in the womb. It's thought that it's caused when one layer of skin grows faster than the other. The outer layer of skin is called the epidermis. The epidermis has a lot of layers. The bottom one, the basal layer, is where new skin cells form. As you grow, the basal cells are multiplying. Since there isn't a lot of room due to the other layers, the cells start to twist. That forms the ridge pattern on the top of the skin.
