A flame detector is a fire protection device, which detects the flame in the place where it is fixed and issues an alarm thereby alerting nearby people to the danger of fire. In most of the manufacturing companies, furnace flame detector is used in order to detect and prevent fire. Flame detector responds either to radiant energy visible to the human eye or outside the range of human vision. Most flame detectors work either by optical flame detector or flame ionization detector but some of them use combination of both detectors.

Flame detector works at specific ranges, which uses optical sensors to record the incoming radiation at a particular wavelength. The energy radiated from the flame is electromagnetic radiation and it can be identified at various spectral ranges like UV, IR and VIS. Depending upon the sensor used there are number of flame detectors available they are infra red flame detectors, ultra violet flame detector, UV/IR, IR/IR and tripe IR spectral band detector. Flame detector has a cone of vision that defines the effective capability of sensing fire. It is inefficient for slow fires however it responds faster for rapidly developing fire like combustible gas and liquid. It is available in different shape and size. Flame detectors come in two categories and each of these can be broken down into a few types each. The two main categories are commonly referred to as a flame rod and a fire eye.

A flame rod is just as it's name suggests a rod which is in the flame. The three most common of these work on different principles. In one the heat of the flame causes the rod to heat up. Inside the rod are two dissimilar metals which when heated produce a small electric current. This electronic signal is amplified and is used to hold the solenoid gas valve open providing fuel to the flame. The second flame rod completes an electric circuit which passes through the fire to the rod. Think of the fire as the switch in this circuit when the fire goes out the circuit is broken and shuts off the power holding the gas solenoid valve open thereby shutting off the fuel flow to the boiler. The third rod has an AC current applied to it. The rod is made of metals that when the rod is heated it becomes a rectifier. That is it converts Alternating Current into Direct Current. An external sensor detects the DC, this verifies the existence of a flame and keeps the fuel circuit open.

A fire eye does not touch the flame but is in the line of sight of the flame. The eye is exposed to the radiation of the flame and this radiation affects different types of eyes in different ways. Any photo radiation causes the photoelectric tubes to generate an electron flow. The same is with the materials in the ultraviolet detector. Infrared rays cause the material in it's detector to change in resistance. This can be measured and taken as proof of a flame. The same material in an infrared detector is used in a flicker detector. Here the resistance across the material changes with the flicker of the flame indicating that there is indeed a flame. The main advantage to this is it cannot be fooled by another heat source such as glowing refractory which provides a constant nonflickering source of radiation.

Smoke detectors have an ion chamber with a high voltage source and a small amount of the radioactive isotope 241Am95. Normally, there is no current flow across the ion chamber. If smoke enters the chamber, however, the radioactivity ionizes the smoke, and the high voltage source induces a current flow that is detected, causing an alarm.

How does flame rectification works in a gas furnace?

AC voltage(at least 90vac) pass through the flame sensor and the ionization of the flame creates or rectifies the voltage to DC and a small microamp that can be measured with a meterl.

Does a homemade metal detector work better over soil or sand?

A homemade metal detector works better over sand. It works the Same both of them but it takes a longer time to find the metal in the soil. Try it at home just grab soil sanda radio and a calculator. Also a piece of metal .

Why is it important not to used Nicads in smoke detectors?

The battery in a smoke detector should last a year (though the detector should be checked monthly). The detector works on "trickle" current that is always there. NiCads will lose more current than an alkaline battery from just sitting around - much more. Even a fully charged NiCad will usually not last a year in a smoke detector. Alkaline batteries will easily.
