Apples approved way is to shut down the computer for at least 10 seconds then restart and press the Shift key immediately after the start up chime, hold it until you get the grey Apple logo and the spinning gear indicator.

You can just restart then hold down the shift key instead of shutting the computer completely down but some trouble shooting steps are to cold start the computer, (shutting down for a few seconds to a few minutes to clear the ram, etc, and cool any overheated parts)
