The R4 card is pretty simple. It works using a memory chip (usually a microSD) you simply hook the memory chip (not the r4 card) into a computer, download the appropriate files for your R4 card (the R4 Kernal) at http://www.r4ds.com/ . Then from there all files can be dragged a dropped onto the card (using your basic operating system's explorer [Things like my docs])
I recommend creating a music and games directory though, for simplicity, also, don't forget that the r4 card can hold and play movies, as long as the appropriate player and codecs are there.
