Diabetes is not always preventable'
There are mainly two types of Diabetes: insulin dependent or IDDM and non-insulin dependent or NIDDM.IDDM starts at an early age and requires insulin for its control. It may be inherited and is not preventable
NIDDM usually starts at the ages of 30-50 and can have a genetic pre-disposition. However, many lifestyle factors decide if it will manifest and when. Hence it is also called a lifestyle disease. Factors predisposing to it are obesity, lack of exercise, and diet rich in carbohydrates and fats. There is also a stage before diabetes when the blood sugars are not high enough to label the patient as diabetic but can act as a warning signal. this is called pre-diabetes.
thus with a healthy diet, regular exercise it may be possible to prevent or atleast delay the onset of diabetes especially .NIDDM>
There is also what is called secondary and tertiary prevention. Secondary prevention is taking of medicines regularly by a diabetic and adopting all other measures that will keep the blood sugar in the desirable range. Tertiary prevention is the prevention of the complications of diabetes like heart and kidney disease.

hello

EDIT: Not to debate the above response as it is all true... but not all IDDM start young. The pancreas can break down rapidly fro many reasons such as injury, shock, stress or substance abuse. This need not apply to obesity, poor lifestyles, lack of exercise or bad diets. Diabetes need not begin a "condition" but more of a degradation of the pancreas from a multitude of reasons.

The strangest story I've heard is a person getting stung (on the backside) by a strange insect in the jungle. The toxins from this insect caused the pancreatic cells to degenerate irreversibly forcing an insulin dependency.
