How to install a ceiling fan?

Installing a ceiling fan is fairly easy to do if you have basic electrical knowledge. It is always best to install the ceiling fan where an existing light fixture is so that you can avoid having to run wiring to that location. Below is a step by step guide and by the time you finish your project you can enjoy some cool fresh air.

Step 1. Do not do anything until the power is shut off at the breaker box for that light fixture.

Step 2. Remove the old light fixture. This can be done by unscrewing the bolts that hold the light fixture in place.

Step 3. Disconnect all electrical wires that are joined to the light fixture. Sometimes you have 2 wires and sometimes 3. Black or blue, white and a neutral color, and then the ground if it has a ground wire.

Step 4. You can reuse the wire nuts that held the wires together or you can replace them with new ones you have already bought. Either will work.

Step 5. Look over the housing once the light fixture is out of the way. Make sure it is secure cause the fan is going to be a little bit heavier than the light fixture.

Step 6. Secure the mounting bracket to the housing the light fixture came from. Make sure all the screws are tight.

Step 7. Usually there is a hook on the mounting bracket for you to place the ceiling fan on while you hook everything up. Place the fan on the hook and begin to hook up the wiring. Black to black or black to blue, white to white, and if there is a ground wire, the house wire is hooked straight to the conjunction box, unscrew that screw, wrap the ground screw around it and then screw it back in. Use the wire nuts to cover the ends of the wires you connected. Any other wiring that may be in the way, just push it back into the electrical box or housing.

Step 8. Attach fan motor to the mounting bracket with the screws that was provided with the kit you purchased. Then flip the power back on to ensure it is working properly. Once that is done install the decorative covering and the fan blades.
