For a direct network connection between two devices you need a cross-over cable.
The cable will go from the PC to either a router or a server.

You can use either bridged connection that allows direct access for VM to network adapter. Or you can use NAT configuration. Using Virtual Network Manager make sure that NAT is configured to access Internet through the physical network adapter.

It depends on what kind of connection to internet you have. If you have a wireless router with DHCP just connect to the wireless network through the network card properties. If you have direct connection to the modem you don't need to do anything (usually).
