The first line of defense against rodent or insect infestation is to keep them out. Make sure there are no cracks or areas in the house without proper sealing that would allow insects and rodents. It may not be possible to seal them all, so the second line of defense is to keep the house clean, and all food properly sealed so that rodents and insects can't get to the food. If they don't find it, even if they do get inside, they won't stay, reproduced or return.
