THE STARTER SITS RIGHT ABOVE THE POINT WHERE THE DRIVER SIDE HALF SHAFT CV AXLE ENTERS THE TRANSMISSION. YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE HALF SHAFT TO GET IT OUT.
Lift the vehicle using a jack. Inspect the CV boot for problems. Mark the axle. Separate the CV from the shaft. Remove the CV boot clamps. Use a mallet to knock the CV joint off the shaft. Remove the boot from the CV axle shaft.
how to chance a CV shaft on a 1997 dodge stratus
Buy a split boot from the parts store- that way you won't have to remove the shaft. As long as you have the half shaft out, why not replace it since there is probably some damage to it from having a damaged boot?
Purchase a re-manufactured half-shaft from an auto parts store. The half-shaft comes complete ready to install with a new CV joint. You will spend almost as much for the CV joint kit alone and spend more frustrating time trying to rebuild the old half-shaft.
To replace your CV joint you will have to slacken your hub nut before jacking and removing the wheel. Remove hub nut, remove both bolts on the bottom of the shocky, remove bottom ball joint bolt. You should have enough play to remove your shaft from the hub. Remove CV boot, CV joint should just pull off shaft. I made the mistake of buying and fitting a full drive shaft unnecessarily.

Model Year, 2WD or AWD, And if it is AWD or a 2WD(Front Left-Half shaft) is it your inner or outer? If it is you will need to replace the half-shaft as the inner cv cannot be disassembled.
They make replacements that are split in half, but they aren't generally recommended. What's best (unfortunately) is to remove the shaft and replace it with a stock cv boot. If the cv boot has been open to the elements for a while, damage in the cv joint might have occured.
Most CV Joints are held on by retaining clips. Cut the boot out of the way and clean the grease off with brake cleaner, look for a snap ring, if no snap ring is visible then it may have a retaining clip that requires you to put shaft in a vise and hit the joint to drive the CV joint off the shaft (care should be taken not to damage the cage if it is to be re-used). With the low cost of CV 1/2 shaft assemblies, I recommend replacing the entire half shaft assembly and not bothering with removing the CV from the old shaft.
The car has only one transaxle, AKA transmission, then no, you cannot remove the tranny without removing the tranny. If you mean without removing CV Axle or drive axle or Axle shaft or CV shaft (same thing) then the answer is still no. You cannot remove the transaxle without removing the drive axle/CV shaft.
Trying to fix a cv axle half shaft your self is difficult. Replace it with a rebuilt or new half shaft. The parts to repair yours would cost you more than a complete replacement does.
