get a book, simple remove and reinstall, if it's overheating, check the fan switch mounted on the radiator...also, check the cooling system....:) everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and a professional shop manual should be available at your local library in the reference section, make copies of the appropriate pages, and good luck:)

If you have a 1999 Passat V6, the coolant temperature sensor is located in the lower radiator hose.
Remove the hose from the thermostat housing then remove the housing and then the thermostat.

the thermostat is behind the alternator! gotta remove the alternator and most of the plugs around it to get to the bolts on the thermostat housing
I have a 2000 passat 2.8 v6 wagon, and have owned a 1999 passat 2.8 v6 sedan. I have been told by VW service departments that the AUTO trans units are SEALED so you cannot add fluid! Not sure about manual trans.
replace your abs module its a common problem with v6 passat 99-2003 model.
Drain the radiator into a container. Remove the upper hose at the engine end. Remove the 2 bolts in the thermostat housing and remove the thermostat. Clean the surfaces and install the thermostat and housing. Install the upper hose and refill the radiator.
