One way to accomplish this is to walk your dog on a leash when it goes out to eliminate. If you take it to a certain spot in your yard and praise the dog when it goes to the bathroom there it will begin to get the idea. I have trained dogs to only go to the bathroom in deep grass by this method and even when in strange locations the dog would seek out tall grass rather than eliminate on a path or lawn. It may take a few weeks before it becomes a routine for the dog.

Each time they do out, loudly say NO. They will soon start to get it. That's what I did with my dog and now she doesn't do it. She is now 4.
