You can test the speed of your hard drive using HD Parm. Install hdparm package in Ubuntu. Click Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal and enter "sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda" to test your hard drive.

You shouldnt have to. When you download the content, it will store it on your hard drive memory. Test you hard drive by saving games, demos etc on it. If working, your hard drive is fine.

you have to run a series of tests on your hard drive this can happen by pressing f2 a bunch of times right when you turn your computer on. then you have to look for it and it will say hard drive memory. click on it by pressing the space button and it will do a test. the test will take about 30min to an hour.

If the Hard drive is IDE (40 pins on the back) you would configure the primary hard drive as Master and secondary hard drive as Slave using the jumpers on the back of the hard drive.
