Is this for the book Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry? If it is, Matty was needed because he was one of the very few people that the Forest let past to the other side. He sent messages and other things to the people on the other side of the Forest, and the village found him very valuable for being a messenger. I guess this also could go for the book Messenger, which was the last book in the trilogy.
