Virtualization, at its simplest, is running two or more virtual machines on one single physical machine. Each virtual machine has its own environment, but they all share the resources on the computer. Many people have, unknowingly, used virtualization with their own computer. When you partition the hard drive, you are essentially virtualizing the computer. Through partitioning, you can create two, three, four or more different virtual environments.

By implementing virtualization, small to large businesses, can make better use of their resources while saving time and money. When they virtualize their servers, companies are able to consolidate the number of machines that are physically running which makes them operate efficiently. Therefore, less equipment is needed and it can be used better. Also, you can run different operating systems, on different virtual servers, with the same server. This is useful in companies where programmers need to use different operating systems like Linux and Windows. They can make use of different virtual servers to run the systems, all from the convenience of one single computer.

A virtual server utilizes a hyper-visor, which helps to partition the server so that there is space to run multiple applications on each of the different virtual servers. A single set of hardware can run dozens of virtual servers, thus eliminating the need for dozens of physical servers which were once needed to do the same tasks. Virtual servers are independent of the physical server's resources, so a virtual application can be deployed on any device which is connected to the network. This allows companies who have multiple locations, or employees that work from home, to make their resources available to every employee, no matter where they are. If a virtual server has a problem and needs to shut down, it can also do this independently of the others, so none of the other virtual machines are affected.

What are the three types of virtualization?

The three main types of virtualization are hardware virtualization, operating system virtualization, and application virtualization. Hardware virtualization involves creating virtual machines that emulate physical hardware, allowing multiple operating systems to run on a single physical server. Operating system virtualization, often referred to as containerization, isolates applications within their own environments while sharing the same OS kernel. Application virtualization enables applications to run in isolated environments without being installed on the host system, allowing for easier management and deployment.
