Their soldiers were called out from mainly the small farmers, and with about 400,000 casualties, these were so diminished that during the later Germanic invasion it became necessary to call up the previously ineligible non-propertied class. These had no farms to return to after military service and became reliant on their generals to resettle them. This gave the generals large personal backing, enabling them to seek ongoing power, and leading to the Civil Wars.
