In the TV show, Big Time Rush was discovered by Gustavo Rocque, a mega-producer looking for his next big thing. James wanted to be famous, but Kendall, Carlos and Logan helped him get to the audition. Once there, they all must try out because Kelly (Gustavo's assistant) needs Gustavo to find a new singer or else she and Gustavo are out of a job. Kendall sings, and Gustavo likes his voice. Kendall agrees to go with him to LA, but only if he takes Logan, Carlos and James to make them a singing group.
In reality, nationwide auditions were done. Carlos and Logan got their parts, and then suggested Kendall and James. Kendall wasn't originally going to be in the show. The crew shot the first episode with Kendall Knight being played by the guy who is now Dak Zevon. However, they reconsidered, and gave Kendall Schmidt the job instead.
