Constantine the Great was raised mainly by his mother Helena (or St Helena) who was a Christian. His father, Constantius was a military officer and then governor of Dalmatia. He probably did not see much of his son. When Constantius was appointed governor of faraway Gaul he divorced Helena and married the daughter of the emperor of the western part of the empire (Maximian). Constantine was 16. Mother and son went to live at the court of the emperor of the eastern part of the empire (Diocletian) in the capital of the eastern part of the empire (Nicomedia, in northwestern Turkey). He received a good education and became a prominent member of the court.
