He had a very dismal life, with death at every corner. His dad, David Poe Jr, left when he was 2, and his mom, Eliza Poe, was an actress. She played Juliet at a playhouse, with Edgar in front row every time so she could watch him. To a kid who doesn't know his mom is acting, he just saw his mom kill herself over and over again then she did die before his third birthday. His foster mom, Frances Allan, later died when Poe was 20 from consumption. His wife, Virginia Clemm, also died from consumption.
"The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe reflects his personal experiences with loss, grief, and the concept of death. Poe's life was marked by tragedy and he often explored these themes in his writing. The emotional depth and melancholy in the poem mirror Poe's own struggles with depression and the death of loved ones.
The allegory that the Red Death is consumption (tuberculosis) killing everyone and everything in its way leaving total devastation. For Poe, many ladies he had cared for or loved in his life were taken by consumption leaving him partially or fully devastated internally (His mentor died of a brain tumor).
I would asume that he had a miserable life, and he was a selfish, depressed, and miserable man. He is a gothic person. His father left when he was a baby then both his parents died when he was just a little kid.
This is my opinion and my answer.
The raven tells a story of a man that lost his true love and just cannot get her out of his mind. This bird flies in and he calls it the Raven and all this bird can say is nevermore and then he starts to think that this bird is talking about his love.
Read the story it is AMAZING you can read this story at the Knowing Poe website.
The theory that Poe is talking about his own lost love (his wife who died before he did) as if he himself were the poem's narrator might have some merit. Poe's wife, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe, suffered from a terminal disease known as consumption (tuberculosis), and her condition was known as early as January 1842, and Poe certainly was experiencing similar feelings to the narrator in the poem. Virginia died on January 30, 1847, two years after publication of 'The Raven.'
