Italian actress Eleonora Duse lived 1858-1924. She was famous for a professional rivalry with Sarah Bernhardt and for several tempestuous love affairs. Her most prominent roles were in plays by Henrik Ibsen and Gabriele D'Annunzio (one of her lovers). She made one film, Cenere but ordered it destroyed (though some partial prints survive); after retiring from the stage in 1909 she returned in 1921 to combat financial troubles. She was the first woman ever featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1923.
