It's an interesting story.

Athena visited Hephaestus once to ask for some weapons, but he thought that she had come to seduce him, and he attempted to rape her. Athena managed to escape, and Hephaestus ended up fertilizing the earth. Later, Erichthonius was born, and Athena hid the baby in a box and gave it to the three daughters of Cecrops.

Did Hephaestus and Athena have children?

Hephaestus and Athena "had" one child, Erichthonius, where Hephaestus tried to go for Athena and ended up getting her leg. She wiped off her leg and threw it to the ground, where Gaia the Earth Goddess was fertilized.

Did Athena pledge chastity?

Yes, she decided to remain chaste. She did, however, accompany many men on their journeys, and made quite an effort with Odysseus. She also had a son, sort of. His name was Erichthonius, and was created when Hephaestus sort of, almost raped her, and spilled his seed on her leg/on the ground. In some cases, when it's on her leg, she wipes it off and throws it to the ground, and leaves in disgust. So, really, Erichthonius was of Hephaestus and Gaia, but Athena fostered him.

Who was married the greek goddess Athena?

No one was married to Athena, she was a "virgin" goddess. That did not mean gods and mortals did not lust after her, such as Hephaestus and the resulting son by way of his seed and Gaea, Erichthonius first king of Athens and her adopted son.

How many children did Hephaestus have?

Hephaestus originally had one biological son, who was Erichthonius. He was 'born' when Hephaestus tried to rape Athena. However she escaped him and his semen fell to the ground, and actually impregnated Gaia. Athena became to child's foster mother. There are some myths that Hephaestus did have extra 'sons' but they themselves could be foster children Hephaestus took care of during his exile. And they were Palaimonius and the 'Kabeiroi' on the island of Samothrace - Possible a group of craftsmen, who too were slightly crippled like Hephaestus.

How was Erichthonius bornfrom Athena?

According to the Bibliotheca, Athena visited the smith-god Hephaestus to request some weapons, but Hephaestus was so overcome by desire that he tried to seduce her in his workshop. Determined to maintain her virginity, Athena fled, pursued by Hephaestus. Despite Hephaestus' lameness, he caught Athena and tried to rape her, but she fought him off. During the struggle, his semen fell on her thigh, and Athena, in disgust, wiped it away with a scrap of wool (ἔριον, erion) and flung it to the earth (χθών, chthôn). As she fled, Erichthonius was born from the semen that fell to the (Gaea) earth. Athena, wishing to raise the child in secret, placed him in a small box.
