physically or politically??? Physically according to legend, Japan was formed from drops of water. The drops fell from a jeweled spear that a god had dipped into the ocean. Each drop formed one of the four large and more than 4,000 small mountainous islands that make up Japan. Politically, I have no idea.

It did not form from a single eruption, but it is largely composed of rock from numerous volcanic eruptions over the course of millions of years. However, Japan did not originally form as a volcnic island arc. Instead, it formed from a continental arc on the east coast of the Asian mainland. Somtime in the past 15 to 20 million years, rifting caused Japan to break off from the mainland. Part of Japan also consists of smaller islands that were "welded" into the lager island arc as the Phillipine and Pacific plates collide with the Eurasian and Okhotsk plates.

According to legend, Japan was physically formed by water drops dripping off the spear of a giant godlike creature. However, it is more likely that the islands were formed by volcanic action.
