Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole have developed as the thinner Limestone has been eroded by the sea and has started to erode the softer rock behind the limestone.
. . . .
The formation is that the sea attacks the hardest part of the rock, which is closest to the sea. Once the sea has made a hole through that, it attacks the softer rock inside which forms a cove.
the portland stone eroing
First as a river gorge. That was modified, and the Cove scooped out, by the sea as that rose following the last cold phase of the (present?) Ice Age.
Stair Hole is all marine erosion but partly of a huge deposit of fluvial sediments inland from the Portland / Purbeck Formations that are its outer bulwark.
Ive been looking everywhere for an answer to this and cant seem to find one. Please post this on another website or something if you do indeed find out as I reckon many people want to know.
