From the start, they wanted this sidekick to have a deep admiration for Sonic, and that the sidekick would want to be just like him. A man named Yasushi Yamaguchi came up with the design of a young fox with two tails, and the entry won.
Originally the character was just going to be be called "Miles", however SEGA decided to rename him to 'Tails' instead. Yasushi Yamaguchi didn't like this, so they compromised by making his full name, Miles 'Tails' Prower.
