Mt. Rushmore was made in 1923, it took about 14 years to make.

It was made from lots of large chisels almost lake hammers and was also made from dynamite. So Mt. Rushmore was carved by sculptor Gutzon Borglum after dynamite was used to remove rock & remaining granite was worked smooth.

State Historian Doane Robinson was the first to propose the idea of building a sculpture in the Black Hills. He contacted Gutzon Borglum, who agreed to sculpt the figures. Gutzon Borglum chose Mount Rushmore and the four US presidents to be depicted on the mountain.

Many others were involved in getting approval and funding for the Mount Rushmore carvings.

The Governor of South Dakota signed the Mount Harney bill.

President Calvin Coolidge signed the bill authorizing funding.

Rapid City Mayor John Boland headed the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission and raised funds for the memorial.

Congressman William Williamson was able to get Congress to provide funding for the project. Senator Peter Norbeck was also instrumental in gaining legislation and funding.
